Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are types of dental restorations that repair damaged or missing permanent teeth. Though similar, crowns and bridges have differences, including:

Crowns

A crown covers a severely damaged or decaying tooth. Your Marvel Dental provider bonds the crown on top of your tooth, improving its shape, size, and appearance.

Bridges

A bridge fills a missing space or gap in your smile. There are several types of bridges, but they all have a similar design. There’s a false tooth to replace your missing one –– and two crowns or a metal framework that hold the bridge in place.

Your provider bonds the crowns or the metal framework to the healthy abutment teeth on either side of the missing tooth.

What does getting crowns and bridges involve?

At Marvel Dental, getting crowns and bridges takes two visits about a week apart.

Getting a crown

Your Marvel Dental provider performs an oral exam and takes a series of digital X-rays. If you have a damaged or decaying permanent tooth, they numb your mouth with a local anesthetic and prepare it to receive the crown.

Then, your provider takes impressions of your tooth and sends them to a dental lab. Techs at the lab use your impressions to design and create a custom crown. When it’s ready, you return to Marvel Dental, and your provider bonds it on top of your tooth.

Getting a bridge

If you lose a single permanent tooth due to trauma or extractions, the team at Marvel Dental recommends a bridge. Your provider numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic, and then removes a thin layer of enamel from your teeth on either side of the missing space in your smile. They take impressions of your mouth and send them to a dental lab.

Techs at the lab use your impressions to design and manufacture a custom dental bridge. When it’s ready, you return to Marvel Dental, and your provider bonds it in place.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

Crowns and bridges last between 12 and 15 years* on average, but it’s possible to extend their use.

The team at Marvel Dental recommends practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily, visit your dentist every six months for preventive maintenance, and wear a mouthguard to protect your bridge or crown if you play contact sports.
