Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What Are Crowns and Bridges?

Crowns and bridges are restorative dental treatments designed to repair and replace damaged or missing teeth. While they serve similar purposes, there are key differences:

  • Crowns – A dental crown is a custom-made cap placed over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance.

  • Bridges – A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of a false tooth (or teeth) anchored in place by crowns on adjacent healthy teeth or a strong metal framework.

Together, crowns and bridges help maintain proper bite alignment, restore chewing ability, and improve the look of your smile.

What Does Getting Crowns and Bridges Involve?

At Marvel Dental, the process for dental crowns and bridges is simple and typically requires two visits:

Getting a Crown

  1. Oral exam and digital X-rays to assess tooth health.

  2. Local anesthetic to numb the area.

  3. Tooth preparation by reshaping the damaged tooth.

  4. Digital impressions sent to a dental lab for a custom crown.

  5. Final placement of the permanent crown at your next visit.

Getting a Bridge

  1. Local anesthetic to ensure comfort.

  2. Slight reshaping of the teeth on either side of the missing space.

  3. Digital impressions taken for a perfect fit.

  4. A custom bridge is fabricated at the dental lab.

  5. Final bonding of the bridge for a natural and secure smile.

How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last?

Crowns and bridges last between 12 and 15 years* on average, but it’s possible to extend their use.

The team at Marvel Dental recommends practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily, visit your dentist every six months for preventive maintenance, and wear a mouthguard to protect your bridge or crown if you play contact sports.
