Endodontics Q&A

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is an area of dentistry that focuses on the pulp and surrounding tissues inside of your teeth. When tooth decay or an infection reaches the pulp, it can spread and destroy your teeth, tooth-supporting tissues and bone, and even travel to your head and neck. To prevent more serious health concerns, it’s important to visit Marvel Dental treatment.

What are the most common endodontic treatments?

Marvel Dental offers several endodontic treatments at their office, including:

Root canal therapy

Root canal therapy is the most common type of endodontic treatment. Your Marvel Dental provider typically performs a root canal if you have a tooth infection that’s reached your pulp. During this treatment, they drill a small access hole into the affected tooth to remove the infection and any diseased tissue.

Then, they clean out and disinfect the tooth chamber before replacing the pulp with a putty-like material called gutta-percha. Finally, they seal the tooth and return it to full function.

Retreatment

While root canal therapy has a 95% success rate, an infection can return if you don’t care for the tooth properly. If you have a dental crown, your Marvel Dental provider will remove it to access the infected tooth underneath. Then, they remove the filling material and completely clean out the chamber to examine the tooth.

Your Marvel Dental provider uses an in-office endo microscope to observe any small canals that may need retreatment. Finally, they fill and seal the tooth to prepare it for a new crown at a later visit.

What are the symptoms of a tooth infection?

Many people have no idea they have a tooth infection until it advances and begins affecting the nerves in their tooth. Some of the most common symptoms of a tooth infection include:

  • Tooth pain
  • Pain that worsens when chewing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Swollen gums
  • Fever
  • Facial swelling

A rush of foul-tasting liquid is a sign of a burst abscess and requires immediate medical attention.
